The river taxi is amazing! We really enjoy experiencing Thai transportation! |
Hello Friends!
Disclaimer: I am sorry it has taken so long to get this blog up! We have been on the road and it has LITERALLY taken 5 days to upload these pictures. Sorry for the wait!
We are enjoying our fourth week in Thailand! Classes are going well but we can't believe our first session is almost done! We're having a lot of fun traveling around Bangkok with our students who help us experience the Thai culture.
Just a few highlights from last week...
Some of my students took us on the river taxi to downtown Bangkok to see the Grand Palace (which is where the famous emerald Buddha is), the Wata Run Temple and the surrounding downtown Bangkok. We had a LOT of fun with our Thai “tour guides”. I felt bad for the other foreigners that we saw (there were MANY foreigners at the Grand Palace) because they didn't have cool Thai friends to hang out with them like we did. Very fascinating to see the temples through the eyes of our friends and have them explain about Thai culture and Buddhism. I've decided the best way to tour a new place.... is with a native friend! :)
In other exciting news, we added the Thailand ER and hospital to our list of positive experiences. Jonathan had some sort of reaction to a food or plant that caused lethal itching and excessive skin bubbling and liquid dripping on his ankles. When it started to spread all over his body, we visited the ER late one night because we were busy with school activities for the next two days. The ER doctor referred us to a skin specialist who us saw the next day. The hilarity and adventure continued when Jonathan had a close call with a sex change when his name got crossed with another Jonathan David that was at the doctor at that time. It's not every day that you go in for a rash and come out with boobs! Long story short, Thailand doesn't have poison ivy (which we thought it might be) and the doctors still aren't sure what caused the reaction.(I will send pictures upon request :) Thankfully, it is getting much better despite how bad it looked and Jonathan is still a man. Hallelujah! :). All in all, for 1 ER visit, 2 Skin specialist visits, and a small pharmacy of prescriptions, it cost us less than $200! Through it all, Jonathan has been a real trooper. He smiles and goes on with life despite the deadly itching. Several people have commented that "He still seems happy!".... I just smile and say... "That's my guy!"... he's AMAZING!
Another positive experience from the week... Jonathan and I had the chance to be on Thailand radio! One of my students is a DJ on the radio, so she asked if we would come and talk about Minnesota and our time in Thailand. It was was a really fun experience! She asked us questions live on air and then translated for the audience. We had a lot of fun trying to explain why people visit Minnesota (that was one of her questions) and what people should do while they are there.
As you could have guessed, we have continued to eat many exciting things since our last blog. Let's see... raw shrimp, squid, cow stomach, cow intestine, bamboo worms. We're also REALLY enjoying the fresh fruit here! Tropical fruit is much sweeter here than in the states. You can also buy it for pennies! Soo... we're eating as much as we can while we're here :).
We just got back last night from a weekend in Malaysia to renew our visas. We had a great time. Acquired a bit of accidental sun burn. Pictures to come in the next blog.
Hope all is well on your side of the planet (Wherever that might be!)
Until next time,
